Summary
Five acres of countryside, twenty minutes from Durham. Big Thunder Farm was designed for the kind of weekend where someone actually cooks. Three ovens, Fulgor Milano appliances, a six-burner induction range, and everything a serious kitchen needs. Screened porch facing the pond. Fire pit at sunset. Four bedrooms for eight. The kind of place you find once and keep coming back to. Be Delighted.
Space
Big Thunder Farm sits on five acres of former nursery land in Bahama, North Carolina, twenty minutes north of Durham. The trees here are the first thing guests notice — specimen plantings from the nursery era, mature and specific in a way that takes decades to grow. The property has the feel of somewhere curated for your arrival, which is exactly what it is.
Whether you’re hosting a birthday weekend, book club retreat, creative workshop, holiday gathering, or simply escaping the city with friends, Big Thunder Farm is designed to make shared time feel effortless.
Every room invites connection: long dinners in the dining room, coffee on the screened porch, late-night conversations around the firepit, and slow mornings in a kitchen built for cooking together.
KITCHEN
The kitchen is the reason to book this house. Three ovens: a Fulgor Milano double wall unit and a third in the range. A six-burner induction cooktop from the same line. A Moccamaster for coffee, Breville small appliances throughout. A knife set that a professional chef used at Christmas and wrote about in their review. Spices, platters, a large eat-in island with stools, and room for the whole group to be in it at once. If your group cooks, this is the kitchen you have been looking for.
GATHERING SPACES
The main living area is open and scaled for groups. The formal dining table seats eight. The screened porch is three-season with a ceiling fan and heater, positioned to face the pond — morning coffee, evening dinner, or a long lunch that runs into cocktails. The fire pit is at the edge of the pond, opposite the dedicated sunset bench.
BEDROOMS
Four bedrooms across two floors: two up, two down. 3 Queen beds upstairs, 1 Queen and 2 Singles on the first floor. Room darkening shades in every bedroom. Beds are made to hotel standard. The primary bathroom upstairs has a walk-in shower. The downstairs bathroom has a tub and double vanity. An additional powder room completes the configuration.
OUTDOORS
Five acres to walk. Old tobacco barns from the property’s nursery history. A pond you can sit beside at golden hour. The fire pit and the sunset bench are positioned at the water’s edge — you will see it when you see it. Parking for five vehicles on the driveway. Across the road, Bahama Bluebs is a working blueberry farm operated by the same owner.
WORKSPACE
A private, ergonomic workspace is available for anyone who needs to log a few hours while the rest of the group explores.
You walk in and it is already done. The local coffee is in the kitchen. The bed is made right. There is a handwritten note that says we saw why you are here.

Neighborhood
Bahama, NC is a small rural community in the northern Durham County countryside. The land is open and quiet. At night, it is genuinely dark. This is twenty minutes from the restaurants, breweries, and markets of Durham — close enough to run in for dinner, far enough to feel actually away.
From Big Thunder Farm:
Coffee and farm stand: Bahama Bluebs, operated by the same owner, is directly across the road — a working blueberry farm with a seasonal stand and a pavilion opening fall 2026. For a full coffee shop, Perfect Lovers or Omies Coffee in Durham are approximately 15 minutes south.
Restaurants and markets: Downtown Durham is 20 minutes — Geer Street Garden, Dashi, Mateo, Mothers and Sons, the Durham Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. Grocery stores are 11 to 25 minutes depending on store. King’s Red & White is a local fave, and next door to Omie’s Coffee.
Outdoor: Horton Grove Nature Preserve and Stagville State Historic Site are 3 miles. Lake Michie Park and Marina is 10 minutes, for fishing or paddling adventures. Eno River State Park is approximately 15 miles south, great for hiking. The property itself is the primary outdoor amenity — five acres to walk, a pond, and an old nursery’s worth of specimen trees.
Drive times: RDU Airport, 30 minutes. Duke University Hospital, 25 minutes. Research Triangle Park, 30 minutes. UNC Chapel Hill, 40 minutes. Downtown Durham, 20 minutes.
Access
You’ll have full, private access to the entire house and surrounding property.

Notes
A few things worth knowing — we share these not as a warning but because guests who know what to expect tend to have the best stays.
Cell signal is limited at this address. The WiFi connection inside the home is strong and reliable. We recommend downloading any navigation or maps before you leave Durham. Most guests find the quiet a feature rather than a friction point.
Outdoor safety: The pond is naturalized for local wildlife and is not for swimming, wading, or fishing. The historic tobacco barns and outbuildings on the property are preserved for character only. They are not structurally safe and are not accessible to guests under any circumstances. Please stay on the walking grounds, porches, and designated outdoor spaces.
Exterior security cameras are present on the property. These monitor the exterior grounds and entry points only.
Reservations include identity verification through our screening partner, Safely. You may receive an email to complete this step — check your spam folder if you do not see it within 24 hours of booking.
Pets are not permitted at this property. Delighted Properties has pet-friendly homes available — please contact us and we will find a great fit for you and your pet.
The outdoor fire pit is available for use. Firewood and kindling are stocked on the property. Extinguish completely before going inside — douse with water, stir ash, and confirm no embers remain.
The charcoal grill is available just outside the screened porch. Allow ash to cool completely before disposal in the metal ash bin.
Note on the blueberry farm across the road: Bahama Bluebs is operated by the same owner and is open seasonally. It is a separate property and not included in your reservation. Guests are welcome to visit during open hours. Please do not park in the Bahama Bluebs lot.
Please keep food waste and cooking grease out of the kitchen drain and avoid flushing anything other than toilet paper. The Farm is on a well and septic system.
Stays of 29 nights or more are available and may incur additional fees. Please contact us before booking a stay of this length.
